‘Circularity’ and ‘compostable’ – is there a difference and why does it matter?

With sustainable businesses on the rise, it can be hard to keep up with the new terms and phrases being used in marketing. ‘Circularity’ and ‘compostable’ are two processing terms that have been adopted by environmentally conscious businesses. Both concepts are beneficial for the environment; however, they relate to different themes. Here, we are going to take the confusion out of these two phrases and break it down for you!

Compostable

‘Compostable’ is a term used to describe organic material that can be decomposed into simpler organic and inorganic compounds (referred to as ‘composting’). Businesses often use this term to describe how to dispose of production waste, packaging waste, or even how to dispose of a product at the end of its life. The advantage of compostable waste products is that they are usually nutrient-dense and beneficial for plants and microorganisms. While this is environmentally advantageous, this approach only superficially addresses the problem of waste within a business. It is compounded by the fact that the compostable materials may have been created from virgin (previously unused) materials, creating a ‘use once and throw away’ mentality. This is referred to as a linear economy, where there is a ‘take, make and dispose’ approach to production. This causes an unnecessary strain on resources and the production of ‘use once’ materials can contribute to climate change.

Circularity

In a world where there is excessive waste, plastic pollution and climate change, now is the time for being environmentally responsible. At Brandonno we recognize that we have a responsibility to the environment; that’s why we have chosen to implement a circular economy. Everything we do is done to minimize our ecological footprint by reducing our waste, water usage, and forest impact, and choosing to use environmentally-responsible packaging.

We are proud that all of our packaging is eco-friendly; our coffee and cookies are both packaged in a way that promotes circularity with zero waste. Our coffee is packaged in mono-plastic bags (single plastic), which allows for better recyclability and reuse of the packaging after use.

Our soft amaretto Italian cookies are also packaged with recycled materials. The cookies are packed in bags made from recycled plastics that keep the cookies hygienically protected. The bags are then placed in carton boxes made from recycled paper for further protection. Of course, both the plastic bags and the carton boxes can be recycled again. The more times plastic and cardboard can be recycled and repurposed into something else, the less reliance we have on environmentally damaging fossil fuels or virgin forests in production.

At Brandonno we are always striving to improve our production processes to ensure we tread lightly on this planet. We do this so you can enjoy a Brandonno coffee with our delicious cookies knowing that your purchase is helping reduce the world’s contribution to climate change and keeping our land, oceans, and world free from unnecessary plastic.
